How do we collect data

Currently there is only one way of collecting this data:

  1. the customer deploys an OVA (VMWare virtual machine) into their network
  2. the collector regularly pulls metrics from switches and Wifi
  3. the collector stores those metrics in its own, local DB (pre-installed on the OVA)
  4. an Extreme representative exports the local database after X weeks of collection

We are looking into the alternative option to directly store metrics into a cloud DB instance but it is not implemented yet.

What data do we collect

First of all: the collector is not collecting Personal Identifiable Data (PII)! The collector can be enabled to (optionally) collect the end-system list from your Extreme Access Control (NAC) solution which contains data on clients connected to your network. But it is not retrieving the username field!
We are also not collecting metrics per end-system (=MAC or IP) neither from the switches nor your Wifi solution. So we don't know which user connected nor what they did on your network!

Switching

Here is the data we collect from your EXOS & VOSS switches:
  • Interface speed (copper, optical)
  • Interface traffic
  • Link topology (LLDP)
  • PSU #, PSU type, PSU consumption
  • PoE port classes & per port consumption
  • Switch models
  • CPU & Memory utilization %
  • Fan Speed
  • Sites: name, country

Wireless

Here is the data we collet from your XCC & WING Wifi controllers:
  • Access Points: serial, type, mac, IP, name, SW, site, ETH power status
  • LLDP data
  • Client Traffic per Radio: bytes, packets, RSS, OS Type (aggregated per Radio - not client MAC!)
  • Radio Metrics: channel data, # clients, SNR, Noise, occupancy (aggregated per Radio - not client MAC!)
  • Sites: name, country, timezone, city

Supported Devices

Extreme Networks and their thousands of customers have a very large portfolio of diverse hardware and operating systems variants in the field. For the purpose and scope of this project we will have to focus on

  • two switch operating systems, EXOS and VOSS, and
  • two Wifi controllers, XCC and WING,
and don't support any of the others.

In regards to EXOS switches:
  • the X440-G2 switches don't have the necessary PSU driver implemented that allow the collector to retrieve power data. So this HW is also not supported for this project.
  • OS version 37.1 doesn't support running debug commands when using a read-only account. Please provide read-write credentials for those devices to the collector. The collector uses debug commands to retrieve metrics but it is never changing any device config.
